Explanation:

Preposition is a word or phrase which serves to connect it's object with the rest of a sentence. In doing so , the prepositions phrase to the ideas expressed in the rest of the sentence.

Examples :

The little kitten was on the table. ( 'On' in this sentence indicates the relationship of location )

Look at the photograph . ( 'At' in this sentence indicates the relationship of time.)

James is going towards his room. ( 'Towards' in this sentence indicates the relationship of direction.)

He dived into the river.( 'Into' in this sentence indicates the relationship of motion.)

She wrote a letter with a pencil . ( 'With' in this sentence indicates the relationship of means )

Some common prepositions are :

at , above , opposite , across , from , by , along , in front of , into , near , out of , down , against , during , over , for , past , in , among , round , since , around , through , inside , to , under , before, behind , until , below , up , beside , next , of , on , with , between , off , within etc.
