A wide range of governmental structures and entities, from totalitarian regimes to socialist to libertarian governments, have been proposed by political theorists throughout history. Libertarian thinkers believe that the government should intervene and control as little as possible of its citizens' lives. Socialist governments collectively own and/or operate some markets and services. Totalitarian governments control all aspects of their citizens' lives from their religion to the economy. Under what circumstances would a totalitarian government be necessary or preferred by its citizens?
