Beowulf – Point-of-View—Grendel’s Mother Point of view is an integral tool of description in the author’s hands to portray personal emotions or characters’ feelings about an experience or situation. Writers use point of view to express effectively what they want to convey to their readers.

Point of view is sometimes the only thing that differentiates one telling of a story from another. For instance, if six people witness the same car accident, six different versions of that accident might develop.

For this assignment you need to tell the story of the battle between Beowulf and Grendel’s Mother from Grendel’s Mother’s point of view. Rewrite lines 467- 542 from the perspective of this monster. This is not to be line for line. This should be a narrative (this means story!) that covers all of the main events of the fight. You should stick to the time period (no modern references) and use vivid imagery to give the reader a clear picture of the sights, sounds, and even smells of the event. This should be 1-2 pages in length. Include and underline three of your Beowulf vocabulary words.

***Make sure your story goes beyond the fight (before or after) ***

Events:

*Murky, gross water

*Beowulf descends into the water

*Bare-handed fight blow for blow

*Other sea creatures trying to attack him

*The battle-hall

*Hrunting, his sword, will not help him

*More battle (saved by his mail shirt)

*Beowulf notices sword made by giants

*Beowulf slices through head of Grendel’s mother

*Slices through Grendel’s head
