How do you account for the police officers chatting calmly with the murderers instead of reacting to the sound that stirs the murderers into a frenzy? In the story "The Tell-Tale Heart"

The narrator offers one explanation for why the officers chat with him calmly rather than reacting to what he thinks is the ever more loudly beating heart. He says they hear it but are pretending not to in order to mock and deride him. The narrator states:

Was it possible they heard not? Almighty God!—no, no! They heard!—they suspected!—they knew!—they were making a mockery of my horror!—this I thought, and this I think.

Of course, there is another, much more plausible explanation. Since the heart of a dead man can't beat, it seems more likely that the sound the narrator hears is an auditory hallucination. Riddled with repressed guilt over.
