People in Beowulf's time probably had a lot of enemies attacking them as evident by the coast guard thinking Beowulf and his company had come to invade Denmark when he first arrived. Also they were being attacked by a monster named Grendel every night.

It is therefore logical to assume that hearing stories of people who were strong and courageous made them feel at ease because they felt like they could be protected if the time came. They probably also looked up to such people and admired them for being strong enough to vanquish enemies.
