Read the excerpt from "Freedom Riders." They didn't know I was only sixteen. That's what went
through my mind as the bus doors opened and the
group of us, lined up in the hot sun along the side of the
bus, began to move forward. I knew I looked old for my
age. But maybe, if they knew the truth, they'd kick me
out. Maybe I should let the truth slip out so they would
kick me out. But I knew I wouldn't. I was determined to
be a part of this ride, because this ride was going to
make a difference. And I couldn't stand it if things
