Jacob trudged through the woods, listening to the crunch of the red-orange leaves under his hiking boots. Aside from occasional bird calls and the rustle of leaves
in the trees, it was the only sound he had heard for the last hour. He searched the
trees, hoping to find a familiar trail marking on one of them, but there was none in
sight. Jacob glanced up at the darkening sky and tried to dismiss his growing
apprehension. It was his first time in these woods, and even though he had a map, he
had forgotten his compass. To make matters worse, the sun would set in a couple of
hours and he had not bothered to pack a flashlight. Besides the map, all he had in his
knapsack was a bottle of water and a book. Jacob stopped to sit on a fallen tree. As
his hands shook with nervousness, he took out his map and tried once again to
pinpoint his location. Daylight was scarce and he didn't know if he'd ever see home
again.
