Which is the best summary of paragraph 2? Though it may sometimes look like America has abandoned the beliefs that inspired its creation, it’s to those beliefs that we still turn in time of trouble.

America is sustained by a dream of justice, tolerance, and humanity. In spite of history’s adversities and vicissitudes, the dream is still alive, and we need it now more than ever.

We have often failed to maintain the standards of equality and ethnic inclusiveness upon which the American ideal depends, but when our sovereignty is under threat we realize they are the source of America’s unique strength.

American history is not all about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. So much of it is about the very opposite that students often find it hard to believe the lofty principles upon which this nation was founded are still alive and well—though buried so deep in the American psyche that it can take a war to awaken them.
