In February 1941, the US Armed Forces asked the Red Cross to organize American blood banks. The Red Cross appointed Dr. Charles Drew as the assistant director of
this program. Dr. Drew immediately established the highest standards. He trained
staff members and volunteers. He oversaw the opening of blood collection
centers nationwide. When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the
US had a large supply of blood plasma on hand.
