What is the most important function of the balcony as part of the passage’s setting? “The Siege of Berlin,”

The Siege of Berlin is a short story written with a war theme.

The bacony in the story functions a symbol of an Old War Veterans hope, disappointment and demise.

Explanation:

Colonel Jouve, according to the story, had taken residence in Champs−Élysées in a building with a Balcony. He was too old to go to war but was enthusiastic that Prussia (which comprises present-day Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, and Russia) would return from the battle victorious.

Soldiers seldom have any other life besides fighting to protect the throne and the sovereignty of their nations. Such was the nature of Colonel Jouve. He lived or died with his country.

His country at way, he had intentionally taken residence at the apartment with the balcony with the intention that on the return of his King and fellow soldiers, he would stand there in full military regalia to witness the triumphant parade of the soldiers.

Unfortunately, after protracted collusion between his doctor and his grandaughter to prevent him for the sad news that would dash his hopes, he, at the sound of what he mistook to be the sound of a victorious army marching back into the city, took to the balcony, in full regalia only to have his very fragile heart dashed to pieces.

Too much for him to bear, he staggered and fell at the sound and sight of the enemy's army.

martians or other types of aliens represent a unique fear as opposed to zombies. vampires and other types of monsters.   in most sci-fi stories, aliens come from other worlds and have different or more advanced technology.   abductions and experimentation on human bodies that involve these technologies, or the use of these technologies against human beings and the use of unknown "powers", are a type of fear that's different from that of other types of monsters.
