A conflict is a problem or disagreement between two separate forces.

An internal conflict occurs within the character's mind or heart. For example, character versus self, such as the remorse Macbeth feels when he kills Duncan.

An external conflict happens between a character and an external force: character against character, nature or society. For instance, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Robinson Crusoe struggling on the island, and Hester Prynne against hypocritical Boston society.
