(1) More and more people are starting to look in places other than their chosen career paths to find meaning and satisfaction in life, and one of the most popular

ways folks are doing this is through volunteerism. (2) One specific kind of volunteerism, though, is becoming increasingly popular with people of all ages and stages

in life—volunteer vacations. (3) This kind of vacation, one where the traveler pays her own way and volunteers her time and efforts while on the trip, is being

embraced by people all over the world. (4) The best thing about volunteer vacations is that not only does the traveler get to escape her familiar surroundings and

see new sights, but she also comes home knowing that she has done something. (5) That knowledge brings a kind of satisfaction that a regular vacation cannot

deliver.

(6) Volunteer vacations take travelers almost anywhere across the globe to work on a huge selection of causes. (7) Worried about the elephants in Sri Lanka? (8)

Book a trip to its capital, Colombo, and journey to an elephant sanctuary. (9) Concerned about families living in poverty in Costa Rica? (10) Bring your whole family

down to help build new homes and learn a little Spanish while doing so. (11) Volunteer vacations can take willing helpers to the farthest reaches and most exotic

locations—some luxurious resorts are situated in areas that are steeped in poverty, so vacationers willing to spend half their time working can visit such places in

beautiful countries such as Bali, Mexico, and Brazil. (12) There is almost no limit to where adventurers can go.

(13) Perhaps the most compelling reason to consider a volunteer vacation is the feeling of intrinsic happiness and satisfaction of doing important, helpful work. (14)

Even if a volunteer cannot stay in the location long enough to see a project to its completion, just knowing that one’s work has helped people in need, brought vital

resources to folks who needed it, or helped to save endangered plants or animals brings a kind of pride and sense of meaning that simply spending money to lie by a

pool could never deliver. (15) This alone is part of what has caused volunteer vacations to become awesomely popular across the globe.

(16) There may be no better feeling than being able to visit an exotic location, learn something new, and return home knowing that one’s efforts have helped to

change the world. (17) Because the whole goal behind a vacation is to escape one’s usual, familiar surroundings and refuel, volunteer vacations seem like a win-win

situation with a promise of some kind of success for both the volunteer and those helped by the work. (18) For these reasons, a volunteer vacation is an adventure of

a lifetime.

Voluntourism: an opportunity too good to be true a speech to the student body of evergreen high [1] picture this: it's spring break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. there's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and people at the same time. however, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. while many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference. [2] most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. however, what if you found out the children you are "" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? dale rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist…encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to ."
