REONCILIATION WITH GREAT BRITAIN: Thomas Paine argues that reconciliation with Great Britain is impossible. Great Britain has already inflicted too much damage. The British government has punished the colonies with unjust laws, such as the Coercive Acts. British troops have occupied Boston, murdering people, destroying property, and leaving its citizens financially ruined and starving. Any reconciliation would be forced and unnatural and would not last. In Paine's words, only a person with "the heart of a coward and the spirit of a sycophant" could favor reconciliation. Rev. Charles Inglis, on the other hand. thinks reconciliation is possible and desirable. He argues that there are many advantages to reconciliation. Reconciliation would put an end to the fighting. This would save lives. Reconciliation would also help the American and British economies. Agriculture, industry, and trade could return to normal levels and even grow. British markets would be opened to colonial goods. Immigration would return to normal levels.
