Wiesel shows that the leader of the bloc observes prisoners as if they were arrested, ready to be attacked at any moment. This terrifies the new prisoners who are already very traumatized by the environment in which they are living and are hating the experience, as the concentration camp exists as hell punishing them for what seemed to be eternity. However, older prisoners see the concentration camp as a good place. That's because they witnessed a real horror in that same field months ago, when there was no food, water or blankets and people died in droves. The younger prisoners were very victimized, while the older prisoners were privileged, because they survived to face an even better situation.
