The Sympathetic Beast I stood on my tiptoes, back against the wall, the hairbrush in my hand my only
weapon. The thing slithered from beneath my bed, undulating like a snake; only it
was more like black vapor. The stench of rotting meat assaulted my nostrils.
"Come closer, and I'll..." I waved the hairbrush.
"Brush my hair?" It chuckled and took on a form similar to that of a person's
shadow. "Don't be scared, Brenda." Its voice was pleasant. Human. It was in
continuous motion, but did not come closer.
"You know my name," I whispered.
"Of course," said the shadow. "I've been with you for years, hiding beneath your
bed, waiting in the corners of your room. I'd still be in hiding if not for the fact
