In Chapter 9 of The Outsiders, the boys are preparing for the rumble with the Socs. Before the rumble, Ponyboy asks some of the boys why they fight. Soda likes to fight because it's like a competition, something he can win. He compares fighting to a drag race. Steve fights because he enjoys beating the Socs. When Ponyboy asks Darry why he likes to fight, Darry doesn't answer the question. Instead, Soda answers for him. Soda says that Darry likes to "show off his muscles," but Ponyboy realizes that Soda is telling the truth. Darry likes to show his strength. Two-Bit's reason for fighting is simply because it's what everybody else does. While Ponyboy considers the responses to his question, he realizes that he doesn't like to fight. In his opinion, the only reason that justifies a fight is self-defense.

Steve likes to fight because he has a lot of hatred inside of him. Darry doesn't answer Ponyboy when he asks him why he likes to fight, but Soda says it's because he likes to show off his muscles. Ponyboy says that Darry fights for prideful reasons. Two-Bit tells Pony that he fights because "everyone fights." Ponyboy comments that Two-Bit's a conformist and chooses to fight because it's the "thing" to do. Ponyboy can't think of a good reason to fight, other than self-defense.
