This is when we have to read between the lines, make inferences about the character. We figure out his true character traits by what he says or does or by how other characters react to him. We might be able to tell from what he looks like, but not always. Question 1 options:

This when the author tells us exactly what kind of person the character is. We do not have to read between the lines. For example, if someone is dishonest, we don’t have to “watch” her steal or lie because the author tells us directly that she is a dishonest person.
