Imagine that, rather than depicting a “frown / And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command” the “shattered visage” on the ground depicted a smile, and curved lip, and grin of warm welcome. Would the theme of the poem—“nothing lasts forever”—remain the same? Why or why not? Would other portions of the poem have to change as well, or could they remain the same? How would this change affect the overall sound and tone of the poem? Poem: I met a traveller from an antique land Who said: “Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert.
