Discussion: What Makes a Classic
In the previous lesson, titled Thinking Together, you spent some time learning about collaborative
discussions and how they can help you understand and appreciate great literature. You'll put your
new knowledge to work in this discussion as you and your classmates consider what makes Roll of
Thunder, Hear My Cry a classic young adult novel.
Look back at your journal entry for the lesson Thinking Together. You should have written lots of
questions about the novel--its characters, its plot, and possible themes. You should have written
some possible answers to your questions as well.
Select one of your questions to present to your classmates in a discussion post. In your post, provide
enough background information to make sure readers will understand your question, and suggest
your own answer.
Finally, respond to the posts of at least two other students. Answer the questions the pose, and
explain why you think your answers are correct or valid. (For each of your answers, provide evidence
from the novel.)
