Read the following excerpt from Passage 2. The summer months provide an ideal time for students to devote their efforts to extracurricular activities. For example, many band directors use the summer months to schedule extended practice. This time would be lost if year-round scheduling were used. This means that practice would be crammed into school days. At the same time, students that want to participate in band as well as play sports would be trying to attend multiple practices. All of this would congest evenings and weekends. Clearly, this situation would leave students, parents, and extracurricular leaders scurrying to get from one place to another with no breaks.

As previously noted, scheduling would be a nightmare for families trying to take advantage of extracurricular opportunities. Meanwhile, the typical school day could also prove more complicated. If a family has children attending multiple schools, they might not be attending school at the same time. This could leave one child at home with a day off, while another child goes to class. Can you imagine how hard it would be to coordinate babysitting? Keeping track of bussing schedules would be no different. Just the thought of trying to keep track of where one should be on any given day is overwhelming.
