In "Civil Disobedience," what happens right after the townspeople "locked the door on [Thoreau's] meditations"? Thoreau imagines that the meditations symbolically follow the jailers out of the door. Thoreau begins to write this essay explaining his meditations. Thoreau laughs as he thinks of how naive his jailers are. Thoreau wonders if he could have been asked to do community service.
