He could hear the floorboards creaking beneath his feet. He tried not to make a sound. He didn’t want the burglars to know that he was in the house. He could hear his own breathing. He could hear the strange men talking. They were talking in a foreign language. He thought about hiding. He knew, however, that he had to get out of the house. Any minute they would come up the stairs. He reached the stairwell. He peered cautiously over the banister. He could see three men. They were wearing hoods. They had weapons poised. One of the men was rummaging through a bookcase. He could hear one of them mutter. He said in English, ‘It’s not here. He must have hidden it upstairs.’ Jackson panicked. He looked frantically for somewhere to hide. He could hear the men ascending the stairs. His heart was in his mouth. Silently he slid into the shadows. His eyes were wide open. He was terrified. Jackson could see the men’s shadows coming up the stairs. Quickly, he slipped into the bathroom. He pulled the door behind him. He did not close it completely. He knew that it would bang. He waited in the silence. He came up with a new plan.
