Read the passage from "The Legend of Arthur and the Swords.” Most of Arthur’s knights were protecting the kingdom’s borders to the north. However, Lucan and Bedivere had stayed behind to guard the castle. Arthur considered his choices and decided that with Excalibur to help, he could do the job with Lucan, Bedivere, and Mordred.

The small band made their way through the Dark Forest, and when they had reached the deepest, blackest part, Mordred decided to act. He snuck up behind the king and struck a deadly blow.

Now look at the story elements chart.
