Relating to a Character In this task, you will select the character that you relate to the most from the novel you read in this unit (The Hunger Games, The Secret Garden, Hatchet, or The Red Badge of Courage). You will then summarize the journey of this character and gather information for the creative project you will complete in the next task.

In this unit, you thought about how society shapes who we are. One way that authors show this idea in literature is through characters. Characters are the people, creatures, or beings involved in the events of a story. The actions, behavior, and feelings of these characters drive the story forward.

Often, authors try to make a character relatable to readers. A relatable character is one that readers can understand. A character becomes relatable when readers connect with his or her thoughts and actions. As you proceed in this activity, you may want to review the writing assignments in these lessons:

Choose a character from the novel you read. Write a one-paragraph summary describing how this character changed from the beginning to the end of the novel. Be sure to include the name of the character you’ve chosen in the summary.
