She wanted to be his friend! It confused him very much and got him a bit mad that she was reacting to his taunts with a polite apology. He pushed her around a lot, but she brushed it off. She was trying to focus on the taunts, she wanted to help her family! She worked very hard and got amazing grades despite his remarks of her being dumb. One day, Alam comes over to her and asks her why she always brushes him off because it really bothered him. "I don't want to focus on the negative Alam! I'd rather be your friend!" These words shocked him. He decided they would be better of friends then enemies.
