Whether on a raid or in a war, the basileus is the one most severely tested, for he is literally the leader, stationing himself ‘among the front-fighters.’ The leader is obliged to risk his life fighting at the front of his army (a custom that persisted throughout ancient Greek history). In return for his leadership, the demos in under obligation to provide the basileus with honors and material gifts.”
