13 years old

         The smell of smoke was in the air, music was blasting through the streets, and the stars looking for nice people. It was another family gathering that I wanted no part in. I made my way to the roof with a plate of food, I wasn’t really hungry. I set my plate on the side and lay on my back, while I looked at the stars I thought, how could something be so far away, yet still look so close. Ever since primary I’ve wanted to be an astronaut, I wonder if all those years hanging upside down the monkey bars had prepared me enough. I ended up falling asleep on the rooftop only to be awakened by my mother's yelling.

“Mija, (name 1) get down and say bye to the family!” My mother bickered.

I took one more glance at the stars and smiled.

16 years old

         I was completing a packet for science when the principal pulled me out of class. Of course the class thought I was in trouble and did the classic “.” Once we were in the hallway the principal started crying, I was completely and utterly confused. She handed me an envelope with the word ‘NASA’ on the front. I slowly reached out my hand to take the envelope, once I had taken it I used the same speed to open it.

         It read,’ Dear (full name 1), it has come to our attention that you would be an excellent addition to our youth space program. We will be transferring your studies to Washington, DC to one of our facilities. There will be a bus after school picking you up. Your parents have already been notified and have given consent. They have also packed all necessary things such as clothes and personal necessities. We hope to see you soon.

         I showed no emotion, as usual and waited until the principal motioned for me to return to class. I stuffed the letter in my bag and waited for class to end. After the bell rang I waited till everyone was out of the classroom. There was no reason I waited, I think I waited because of the shock. I’ve wanted to work at NASA for the longest time and I finally have a chance to. I smiled, grabbed my backpack, and walked out. I saw the bus, it was less than half way filled with kids from other schools. I recognized some from sports, once I stepped up to the bus the doors opened with a loud creak. I thought of all buses NASA would have gone above and beyond to make sure everything was in outstanding condition.

         Once I was on the bus I walked down the aisle and felt eyes all over me. I moved to the back of the bus, this bus was different from the school’s. Everyone was sitting in the front; it was nice sitting alone. We stopped at a few other schools, everyone continued to fill the front. The nearest person was six seats in front of me, almost everyone was paired up in seats. I was perfectly fine until one kid decided to sit by me, well he was in the seat next to me. I scooted close to the window while he sat on the edge of his seat. From the moment he stepped on the bus his smile never left his freckled face. He looked more like a football player than a science lover. The boy looked around my age, he had fluffy, unkempt hair. He had a simple white shirt with a blue jacket with yellow sleeves, the initial ‘(initial of name 2)’ on the front. His jeans were a light blue with grass stains on it, his shoes were a dirty white also with grass stains. When he first arrived on the bus he looked at every seat he passed, he just had to look up and see me. He had an obnoxiously large duffle bag that hit every seat he passed.

         The drive to Washington was 27 hours long. Only 22 hours left, it was currently 9:15. Everyone was asleep except for me and the boy. I grabbed my mp.3 player from my backpack before I could put my headphones in the boy tapped my shoulder.

“Hey, I’m (nickname for name 2), short for (name 2).” He pointed to the ‘(initial of name 2)’ on his jacket while he talked and held out his hand.

“Hey, I’m (name 1).” I said while shaking his hand.
