Chaucer used the literary technique of irony to create humor & critique the society and social norms of his time. How does irony play a role in the reader’s perception of Wife of Bath? The literary technique of irony shows the effect of language in which the intended meaning is the opposite of what is stated or the technique can be simply defined as: ‘the effect of a situation in which the opposite of what one would have thought is actually what occurs.”

Create a paragraph (8-10) that identifies the literary technique of irony as it applies to the chosen character’s:
Condition: Refers to their status and role in society
Full array: Refers to the possessions they had brought on the pilgrimage
Profession and degree: Refers to their job or education (or lack of education)
Apparel: Refers to what they were wearing
Be sure to support your claims with textual evidence
in the beginning of the paragraph be sure summarize the Wife of Bath's characteristics. Include some details about the character’s status and role in society. Where in the feudal is their social status? Are they part of the clergy, the nobility, or the peasantry? How should that main character behave as to how they do behave? Include some details about the character’s possessions and to what they might be wearing. What did they bring with them? How does their clothing reflect their social status within the feudal system? What should they be wearing that reflects their true character rather than how they are presenting themselves? Consider what Chaucer said about the character when you identified the irony in your chosen character. Find evidence about what the “Prologue” tells you about the character.
