“Although swarms of jellyfish can be beautiful, they can also be a central part of an ecological disaster in the making.” – Rosalind Fonem. For a creature without a brain, they appear to be doing a lot of destruction. Mnemopsis jellyfish are causing a lot of harm to the Black Sea. They have caused so much destruction it almost led to a political outbreak near the area. But there is a newfound solution. The rapid and large reproduction of the Mnemopsis jellyfish cause many problems such as costing them millions of dollars in local fish industries to shutting down power plants, because they are so overpopulated, but a new positive solution has been found, the Bereo jellyfish, which eat the Mnemopsis jellyfish. Jellyfish occur naturally, and it is still uncertain what cause these big blooms or outbreaks. Especially in the Mnemopsis. They were first discovered in 1982 but then where transported to spread to the Caspian Sea where it then multiplied also. They have spread to more than just The Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, they have been discovered in the Mediterranean, Baltic, and North seas. There nickname the sea walnuts feed off zooplankton that the commercial fish also feed on, which is causing the fish industries to collapse. What is certain is they are damaging our economy and there are hopefully still more ways out there soon to be found to help.

Mnemopsis jellyfish are extremely overpopulated because when they lay eggs, they can lay up to 40,000 per time. They have cause lots of damage to the Black Sea and to area around it. They eat all the fish; they can consume up to 10 times their body weight per day. And they are extremely slow, as well as brainless. They are costing local fish industries millions of dollars. They even clog power plants, leaving many Philippines without electricity for days. It almost occurred a political outbreak in the Philippines as well. Thankfully, a predator was found. The Bereo jellyfish, they consume the Mnemopsis jellyfish allowing the population to decrease some. And although the Bereo jellyfish are okay in the Black Sea it is still worrisome bring them to other areas where the outbreak happened.

A group of High schoolers from Japan also came up with a creative and tasty idea for the jellyfish, to turn them into caramel. It will help bring back money for the damage. And it is also helping instead of depending all on the Bereo jellyfish. Japan is also another area where the Mnemopsis are taking over rapidly. Turning them into candy will help save their seas and keep them from growing even quicker.

The Mnemopsis jellyfish thought they could take over our seas, but they were wrong, after all their new predator can keep them from increasing again. The rapid and large reproduction of the Mnemopsis jellyfish have caused many problems, now thanks to our newfound predator the Bereo jellyfish, the Mnemopsis jellyfish are decreasing. While the Bereo are feasting on their new prey they can eat their tasty caramel made from the Mnemopsis. Now that the jellyfish are under control, they can cherish this moment for years to go without their fears stopping them from defeating the freaks clogging their seas.
