According to Jack London, Huskies are interesting dogs that do not get the credit they deserve for making the Yukon gold rush possible. Huskies are well-adapted to the Yukon because they are part wolf, and though they have been domesticated, they remain wild in many ways. Restraining them in harnesses is difficult because they are so clever. Their intelligence also allows them to find food and water when they are scarce. Huskies sometimes resort to stealing food, which can cause problems between the dogs' owners and the people whose food is stolen. However, the dogs are so valuable that harming a dog that is caught stealing can be very costly. Their value is not surprising, as they are capable of impressive work and known for their loyalty to their masters. They are not, however, as loyal to their fellow dogs, and they often engage in violent and even deadly fights with each other. Many dogs die because of the violent nature of life in the dog pack. Husky packs can also be very frightening to humans who hear them howl together, the sound of which is like nothing else in this world, according to London. —“Husky—The Wolf-Dog of the North,”
