She is startled by this because they are Abnegation, and thinking of themselves is considered selfish and goes against their way of life. The reader can infer that Caleb and Beatrice are both going through a similar struggle.

2. Beatrice is struggling to choose which faction she should join because she is divergent. Most people are assigned one specific faction that their genes match with, but Beatrice has three. She wants to stay with her family, but she also wants to be free. She doesn't really fit in with the selfless Abnegation, but she doesn't want to join Erudite due to her family's view on them. From this you can infer that she will most likely either stay in Abnegation or join Dauntless.

in the quotation from passage, connie willis states that literature is a way for authors from the past to communicate with readers of today. we can read their stories, books, and other texts to learn lessons about life. willis refers to these lessons as messages “from beyond the grave.” willis has a favorable viewpoint about the timelessness of literature.

impartial means: treating all rivals or disputants equally; fair and just.

i would say that impartial is agreeing with something, because impartial means to treat your rivals, arguments, and reasoning equally and fair. so if you rival says something, agreeing on it means you did the impartial.
