The examples help to justify what Shakespeare expressed in his statement that people should not make fun of love at first sight because it may be real. The author introduces us to a character from "The Office" to show us an example of what we mock when we think of love at first sight. Paragraphs 3 to 5 describes the story of Michael Scott, who falls in love with a model from a furniture catalog. The character does everything possible to find the model only to discover that she is, unfortunately, dead. Even so, he visited her grave, singing a requiem to what could have been. In paragraph 21, the author describes a similar event in the love story of Romeo and Juliet. Although Romeo and Juliet did not know each other, he had fallen in love with her at first sight and expressed through a sonnet that he wanted to kiss her, and she (although reluctant) agrees with his feelings. By describing the two stories, the author can then elaborate that "[Romeo and Juliet] connect in such a powerful way — right away — that it is ungenerous to say that their religion of love is only silly. We can not dismiss it in the same way we can mock Michael Scott."
