(12) They also have a long tail that they use as a counterbalance when they turn suddenly while chasing preys. (13) In fact, the tail is more than half the length of a cheetah’s body. (15) The physical features of cheetahs help to minimize air resistance from outside the body and maximize power from within the body. (16) However, cheetahs can accelerate very quickly. (17) They get up to speeds of 40 miles per hour in just three strides and can hit a maximum speed of 70 miles per hour. (18) This incredible feat comes with an affect, though. (19) Cheetahs can run for only short bursts of up to 600 yards before they become too hot and tired to go on. (20) They put themselves at risk for brain damage if they continue to run for to long at top speed.
