Layla scanned the room as she entered. Nearly every mat was taken, and the women in their comfortable yoga pants were chatting easily with each other. As far as she could see, there was only one spot open in the far corner next to the mirror. She hated being the new girl, but she had heard such good things about Karen Brewer, the teacher. Still, everyone seemed to know each other, and that made her feel uncomfortable. Layla found her spot just as Karen walked into the room and clapped her hands, and the students all fell silent. From her mat, Layla could not see Karen's face, only the back of her body in the mirror. She could see that the teacher stood with perfect posture. "Alright class, take your positions. We will do four sun salutations before we do about 10 postures." Karen clapped her hands again, "Hands in starting position, inhale, exhale, and begin."
As the women performed the various movements that make up the sun salutation, Karen walked among them, making comments. Layla was rushing through the movements when Karen stopped her. "The first thing you must learn if you're going to do yoga with me is that faster is not better. Start again, and do it to my cadence."
Immediately, Layla felt like she had made a mistake. She had that same embarrassed feeling she'd had in her third grade dance recital when she turned the wrong way and caused half the girls to fall down. She knew everyone was looking at her, and she wanted to die. That was how she felt right then.
