Once alone Sullivan had Helen touch an object and then spell the name on the palm of her hand in an attempt to make her understand that each thing had a name. But Helen's inner world was empty and the frustration at the lack of results was beginning to take its toll, until one day after walking near a fountain, Anne placed Helen's hand under the water and spelled the word "water" over it. And suddenly, that first childish word that according to her parents had been pronounced so early that it almost seemed a miracle, sprang up in her like the liquid from the source itself.
