the paragraph below:
Simple machines are all around us. They help us to lift things,
play and exercise. Our lives would not be the same without these
machines. Let us consider some simple machines around us. Each
window blind is operated by a pulley that closes and opens it. A
pair of scissors may be used to cut fabric and used to complete a
number of projects. A simple doorknob is a wheel and axle that
allows us to open and close doors. Imagine doors without them!
A rolling pin is another wheel and axle used to help prepare
the dough for baking the crust of your favourite plantain tart.
The string you pull on the ceiling fan to turn it off and on is a
pulley. There are just too many examples to talk about. Let us be
thankful for these simple machines in our lives.

For example, Simple machines are all around us. The complete subject is simple machines. It is described by the predicate - are all around us. The main word of the subject is machines, which makes it the simple subject. We could say Machines are all around us, and the sentence wouldn't change too significantly. Simple is an adjective that modifies that noun machines, which is why it's also a part of the complete subject.

"everyday

use" was written by alice walker. this is a story about two sisters, dee

and maggie wanting to have the handmade quilt. maggie wants to use the thing

for its purpose, while dee appreciates it for being “her heritage”.   the quilt represents family heritage. it was

believed that only dedication and years of hard work can represent a  quilt. 

mama decided to give

the quilts to her less fortunate daughter, maggie because she believed that dee

could not hold the true meaning of their family heritage and   that she would not use the quilts for their

purpose. however, dee believed that maggie can’t appreciate the quilts just as

how she sees them, and she thought that the quilt will be put to “everyday use”

by maggie and within 5 years or so, the quilt will turn into a rag. in the story, dee strongly believed that maggie do not deserve the quilts.
