The German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt journeyed to the Americas in 1799, beginning a five-year
excursion that would profoundly influence modern science. While in South America, Humboldt studied the
flora and fauna of the continent, becoming the first scientist to draw a connection between a region's
geography and the animal and plant life that were able to adapt to it. In 1800, Humboldt mapped over 1700
miles of the Orinoco River and, while on the west coast of South America, discovered and studied the
Peruvian Current. (Over the objections of Humboldt himself, that current is also known as the Humboldt
Current.) Little wonder that Humboldt is known as the founder of the modern fields of biogeography and
comparative climatology.
