Practice making connections between the text and real life.

There are two ways you can do this:

Make a connection between the text and your own life. An example might be, "This character is brave but often doesn't think things through before making a decision. I tend to act the same way when I'm stressed or overwhelmed."
Make a connection between the text and the world you know. We all have ideas about how the world works that go far beyond our own personal experiences. We learn about things through TV, movies, the news, and our own observations. An example would be when a reader says, "I saw a TV show where the main character had a similar conflict," or "I remember watching a movie set in Greece."
