Task 1: Identify the minor character you will be analyzing in the discussion. Write a paragraph analysis explaining and defending the character. Start with the following topic sentence: The minor character (name) is (dynamic or static?) and (round or flat?).

Ex: The minor character Rosa is a dynamic and round character in the story The Book Thief.

Then set out to prove that statement with textual evidence. Try using both quotes and paraphrases in your writing.

Review the rubric before you submit your response.

Peer Example:
The character Jessamine in the Clockwork Angel is a flat and static character. Jessamine is introduced immediately as a bitter and rude individual, after she asks the main character, “is it dreadful, being evil? Are you worried you’re going to hell?” (Clare 68). Jessamine continues to push away the other characters throughout the entire story since they don’t support her plan to marry well to get away from them. This continued characteristic of blunt disdain is what makes Jessamine such a static character; she shows little to no personality because of her emphasis on creating distance between her and others. Very little information is given on Jessamine’s backstory and motivation; the fact that she is not a POV character means that the audience will never understand why she does what she does. Jessamine can never change who she is if she cannot face the reason why she has become so bitter. In this way, she can only ever be flat, since there is no chance for character growth.

Task 2: Read through your peer’s responses. Engage in conversation about their character description, make sure your response includes the following:

1. Do you agree or disagree with the character description? Hopefully, you will know the character. If not, you'll have to decide based on the evidence provided. Explain why you agree or disagree.

2. What evidence does your peer provide that you think is the strongest evidence? Why do you think this is strong evidence?

3. If you know this character, extend the conversation with additional insights or evidence. If you do not know the character, what question do you have for your peer?

4. If you think your peer misunderstands dynamic, static, flat, or round, can you help correct the understanding?
