This is the first paragraph of Tanyika's analytical essay.
The main character in this story seems foolish at first because she doesn't follow the advice of the elders in her clan. She is very beautiful, and several young men want to marry her. She refuses all of them, and instead decides to live alone. Later, she avoids starvation by becoming
an expert fisherwoman.
What should you say to Tanyika about this paragraph, if you become part of her peer review group?
"This summary of the story is very clear. Your first paragraph should state an actual claim about
the story, though--something you have to prove."
"I think we both agree that the main character should have married when she had the chance. I
didn't like the story much at all. Did you?"
"Clearly, you believe that the main character is a strong young woman who has her own ideas.
That's not how I see it, though."
"It is impressive how the main character becomes such an expert in a valued activity. However,
that's not really how the story ends."
