PART 1

1. Read & Highlight Scrooge and Fred's thoughts/feelings about Christmas. I have given you one example!

Scrooge - What else can I be when I live in such a word of fools as this? Merry Christmas! Out with Merry Christmas! What’s Christmas to you but a time for paying bills without money, a time for finding yourself a year older and not an hour richer. If I could work my will, every idiot who goes about with “Merry Christmas” on his lips should be boiled with his own pudding and buried with a stake of holly through his heart.

Fred - There are many things from which I might have derived good by which I have not profited, I daresay, Christmas among the rest. And though it has never put a scrap of gold in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good and will do me good, and I say, God bless it.

2a. Write 1-2 sentences to explain EACH character's perspective on Christmas.

Scrooge's Perspective

Fred's Perspective

D. by presenting Fred as anxious and Scrooge as annoyed

PART 2

3. Read & Highlight Scrooge and the Gentleman Visitor's thoughts/feelings about the poor & charity. I have given you one example!

Gentleman Visitor - At this festive season of the year...

Scrooge - It’s winter and cold.

Gentleman Visitor - Yes...yes, it is, and the more reason for my visit. At this time of the year it is more than usually desirable to make some slight provision for the poor and destitute who suffer greatly from the cold. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir.

Scrooge - Are there no prisons?

Gentleman Visitor - Many, sir.

Scrooge - And the workhouse? Is it still in operation?

Gentleman Visitor - It is; still, I wish I could say it was not.

Scrooge - The poor law is still in full vigor then?

Gentleman Visitor - Yes, sir.

Scrooge - I’m glad to hear it. From what you said, I was afraid someone had stopped its operation.

Gentleman Visitor - Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude, a few of us are endeavoring to raise a fund to buy the poor some meat and drink and means of warmth. We choose this time because it is the time, of all others, when it is keenly felt and abundance rejoices. May I put you down for something, sir?

Scrooge - Nothing.

Gentleman Visitor - You wish to be anonymous?

Scrooge - I wish to be left alone. Since you ask me what I wish , sir, that is my answer. I don’t make merry myself at Christmas, and I can’t afford to make idle people merry. I help support the establishments I have mentioned...they cost enough...and those who are poorly off must go there.

Gentleman Visitor - Many can’t go there, and many would rather die.

Scrooge - If they would rather die, they had better do it and decrease the surplus population. That is not my affair. My business is. It occupies me constantly.

4a. Write 1-2 sentences to explain EACH character's perspective on Christmas.

Scrooge's Perspective

Gentleman Visitor's Perspective

4b. Highlight the BEST answer to the following multiple choice question.

How do Scrooge’s feelings about the poor differ from the feelings of the Gentleman Visitor?

A. Scrooge feels it is important to give generously to the poor; the Gentleman Visitor is stingy and more concerned with his own business.

B. Scrooge feels there are adequate opportunities and resources for the poor; the Gentleman Visitor feels more is needed to ensure the poor have basic needs met.

C. Scrooge feels sympathy for the poor; the Gentleman Visitor insensitive to the poor.

D. Scrooge dislikes winter and cold; the Gentleman Visitor feels the season is festive.

1) earth's crust is made up of relatively rigid plates that ride atop earth's hot, semiliquid mantle. (2) the plates are called tectonic because they're in constant motion. (3) they can move because earth's mantle is a very hot and semiliquid fluid called magma. (4) volcanoes are a result of magma rising up or erupting through a plate, particularly where plate boundaries are moving against each other. (5) also, when plates slide against each other, causing friction along adjacent plate boundaries, earthquakes frequently occur. (6) therefore, we often find volcanoes and earthquakes along plate boundaries. (7) plates may also collide. (8) when that happens, mountain ranges are formed. (9) for example, the collision of the plate carrying the indian subcontinent created the himalayan mountains when it collided with the asian plate. which statement about this paragraph is accurate?

What is the meaning of each underlined word in these excerpts from "a modest proposal" by jonathan swift? i think it is agreed by all parties, that this prodigious number of children in the arms, or on the backs, or at the heels of their mothers, and frequently of their fathers, is in the present deplorable state of the kingdom, a very great additional grievance; and therefore whoever could find out a fair, cheap and easy method of making these children sound and useful members of the common-wealth, would deserve so well of the publick, as to have his statue set up for a preserver of the nation. some persons of a desponding spirit are in great concern about that vast number of poor people, who are aged, diseased, or maimed; and i have been desired to employ my thoughts what course may be taken, to ease the nation of so grievous an incumbrance. the word prodigious means . the word desponding means .
