Can anyone revise this for me? I will discuss the question of the Rosetta Stone and discuss its significance in terms of language and translation throughout this paper. It was shown that the Rosetta Stone was important in deciphering the Egyptian hieroglyphics. The Rosetta Stone is an ancient volcanic rock that was discovered in 1799. The discovery of the stone came about by French soldiers of Napoleon Bonaparte. The stone was discovered while the soldiers were enlarging the fort. After the British defeat of the French, the British took control of the Rosetta Stone. The Rosetta Stone has been in a British museum since 1802. The significance of the Rosetta Stone comes from what was etched into the Rosetta Stone. The Rosetta Stone has three different inscriptions on it hieroglyphic writings.

Hieroglyphics is a language that used pictures to represent objects, sounds and groups of sounds. It was very difficult to read the Egyptian hieroglyphics, which were vital to understanding the Egyptian society. The Greek language on the stone was used to decipher the others languages. As the languages were being deciphered it helped historians be able to better understand the Egyptian hieroglyphics. The hieroglyphics were difficult to understand until the Rosetta Stone was studied. After the Rosetta Stone was examined it was easier to learn about the Egyptian language and culture. Thomas Young made the initial progress on decrypting the Rosetta Stone. The person that finally cracked to code on the Rosetta Stone was Jean-Francois Champollion. Jean-Francois Champollion used his knowledge of the Greek language that was on the Rosetta Stone. One of the things that helped decipher the Rosetta Stone is the code breaking technology that was developed over the years. Still, there are many other writing systems of numerous lost civilizations that have yet to be deciphered. Until then, we can only make well thought inferences, and educated guesses until the next Rosetta Stone is unearthed.

In conclusion, The importance of this to Egyptology is immense. When it was discovered, nobody knew how to read ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. Because the inscriptions say the same thing in three different scripts, and scholars could still read Ancient Greek, the Rosetta Stone became a valuable key to deciphering the hieroglyphs.
