Sense and Sensibility
by Jane Austen (adapted excerpt)
Edward Ferrars did not earn the Dashwoods' good opinion through any personal graces. He was not handsome, and his manners were pleasing only
to those who knew him. He was too shy to do justice to himself; but when this was overcome, his behavior gave every indication of an open,
affectionate heart. His understanding was good, and his education had improved it. But neither his abilities nor nature made him fit to answer the
wishes of his mother and sister. They longed to see him distinguished-as-they hardly knew what. They wanted him to make a fine figure in the
world in some manner or other.
