Read the story summary below, and think about author’s purpose. "I was born in Huntsville, Butler County, Ohio, on December 29, 1830. That was, at this writing,
more than ninety years ago.
My father's ancestors came from England in 1637. In 1665 they settled near Elizabeth
City, New Jersey, building there a very substantial house which stood till almost 1910. More than
a dozen hardy soldiers from this family fought for the Colonies in the War of Independence. They
were noted for their strength, steadiness, and patriotism.
Both my parents were serious, though not overly strict, religious people. Father inherited
to the full the sturdy traits of his ancestors. I remember that for three years, during our life in
Indiana, he worked eighteen hours a day in a mill. For this hard service he received only twenty
dollars a month and grain for the cow. Yet at the end of the experience, he seemed as strong and
healthy as when he started it.
My mother's maiden name was Phoebe Baker. English and Welsh blood ran in her veins.
Her father settled in Butler County, Ohio, in the year 1804, or thereabouts. My mother, like my
father, could and did endure continuous long hours of hard labor without complaining. I have
seen her patch and mend our clothing until very late at night, and still be up in the morning by
four to continue working.
It’s no wonder that with such parents and with such an upbringing, I am able to say that for fiftyeight years I was never sick in bed a single day. I, too, have endured long hours of labor during
my whole life, and I can truthfully say that I have always liked to do my work and that I never was
someone who was eager for the sun to go down so that I could stop working. My mother said I
was "always the busiest young 'un" she ever saw, by which she meant that I was restless from
the beginning—born that way."

Which sentence BEST explains how the author uses characterization to show how he became such a hard worker? The author tells incidents of his parents working hard and notes that it is “no wonder” that he has always been such a hard worker too. The author describes the English and Welsh heritage of his mother as one based on hard work and endurance “without complaining.” The author explains that he is a hard worker even though his parents did not show him how to work hard. The author describes the virtues of his ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War to show why he is so restless.

1. at the conclusion of chapter 13, the monster realizes that he has none of the qualities or possessions that human beings value, and so he worries the he will be forever miserable. he says, “oh, that i had for ever remained in my native wood, nor known nor felt beyond the sensations of hunger, thirst, and heat! ” this statement recalls one made by victor frankenstein in chapter 10: “if our impulses were confined to hunger, thirst, and desire, we might nearly be free; but now we are moved by every wind that blows, and a chance word or scene that that word may convey to us.” questions: what do these two statements suggest about the impact of knowledge? how do the statements affect the way readers view the monster and victor?
