In a marriage, Elizabethan women were expected to bring a dowry, an amount of property, goods, and money to be brought to the marriage. Women are required to provide children and run households after marriage. Large families were the rule because there was such a high mortality rate for children and babies. Many Elizabethan women arranged for their children to be cared for if they died during childbirth.

Queen Elizabeth, I was one of the Elizabethan women who never married because she didn’t want to be inferior to men. She also didn’t want to share her throne with a man. Thus, she remained single throughout her life because marrying would have meant giving up her autonomy as a monarch.
