Written while Brontë was away at school, this poem describes her longing for summer on the heath the
flowery grassland of her home. Heath is also the name
of a purple flower that grows on that landscape.
Review the underlined lines on pages 1
and 2. How does the personification in these
lines MOST add meaning to the poem?
The Bluebell
by Emily Brontë
by suggesting that the speaker has a
personal connection with the summer flowers
of her home
The Bluebell is the sweetest flower
That waves in summer air:
Its blossoms have the mightiest power
To soothe my spirit's care,
by indicating that the speaker views her
home landscape as a feminine presence
There is a spell in purple heath
Too wildly, sadly dear
The violot has a fragrant breath
But fragrance will not cheer,
by revealing that the speaker thinks that
nature is like a person who disappoints her
by suggesting that the speaker is
exaggerating the memory of the beauty of
her home
