The song was written by Lorde and American Musician Jack Antonoff and was debuted on March 10, 2017.  While on Beats 1 Radio, Lorde stated that this song came from a sad time in her life.  She also expressed what the song means to her: "But the song kind of ended up turning into a bit of a protective talismans for me.
