Why is it important to stand up for what you believe in? What are the positive outcomes when people do?

It's important to stand up for what you believe in because if you don't, people will never understand.

About a couple weeks ago, I came out as non-binary to my mother, and she asked me why"because I feel comfortable that way..." I said. Then, she retaliated with "Well, if a guy was watching child p### on his computer, should we accept him for who he is because he's 'comfortable'? No." Of course, this was no where related to the topic at hand. I had to explain to her what it meant, and now she is trying to get use to the new changes.
