"That's what literature is. It’s the people who went before us, tapping out messages from the past, from beyond the grave, trying to tell us about life and death! Listen to them!"(–Passage, Connie Willis). In the passage, Willis informs the reader that literature was made long before our time. It also shows that literature is something used to show our history and give us a reminder to not let it happen again. This urges people to take charge and do something about it with the use of punctuation. In this passage the writer wants to tell use about his contemporary story. A good example is the book Night by: Ellie Wiesel. He talks about how he suffered from the holocaust. This book relates to the idea that literature can tell us about the past. "Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence that deprived me for all eternity of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes. Never shall I forget those things, even were I condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never.”(Ellie Wiesel) this shows how the history he tells destroyed his future of faith and belief.

Another good example of these descriptions is a book "Les Misérables" by Victor Hugo. Besides describing all the troubles of the main characters (and thus describing all the hardships of the people living in those times), Hugo also makes a realistic setting of his contemporary France. This book is also a good source of historical facts and it simply makes us feel the atmosphere of France in 19th century. This is just one example of how the writers make significant connections throughout centuries.
