details that may appeal to your audience.

Reason—Get clear on the purpose of your writing. If you are not sure, ask your
teacher or whoever has given you the task. If it's a creative piece of writing, you
may just need to think about the reason yourself, so you get clear.

Goal—Define the goal you want to achieve with your writing. Are you trying to
accomplish something, win an award, get the attention of your readers? Once
you decide on your goal, you can look at your finished work and know if you
achieved it or not.

Excitement—Ask yourself, "What excites me about this? What's in it for me?" Is
it possible your writing may win you an award, a good grade in a class, get your
poem published in a magazine or newspaper?

Tone—As you have learned, tone is associated with words of feeling or emotion.
Decide how you want the person to feel when they read your writing. Uplifted?
Angry? Excited?
